The first trailer for the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon has arrived, showing Hiccup, Toothless and Gerard Butler who will reprise his role as Stoick from the animated movies. The live-action movie is based on the series of children’s books from British author Cressida Cowell, though it seems to be remaking the popular DreamWorks movies.
The first trailer is short but sweet, teasing fans with shots of Hiccup, Toothless and familiar scenes from the first animated movie. Toothless, for the most part, has retained his eye-catching design from the DreamWorks animated movies and it looks pretty good in live-action, all things considered. Hiccup, who was previously voiced by Jay Baruchel in the animated movies, will be played by Mason Thames, best known for The Black Phone.
Gerard Butler will now play the live-action counterpart of Stoick which was also voiced by the actor in the animated movies. Nico Parker will play Astrid. Dean DeBlois, the writer behind the DreamWorks trilogy, will both write and direct the live-action adaptation.
The DreamWorks animated trilogy of movies were critical and commercial successes. The first How to Train Your Dragon was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2010 but lost to Toy Story 3. Sequels, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, were released in 2014 and 2019, respectively.
The plot synopsis for the first animated movie, which is presumably going to be the same for the live-action remake, reads:
“Long ago up North on the Island of Berk, the young Viking, Hiccup, wants to join his town’s fight against the dragons that continually raid their town. However, his macho father and village leader, Stoik the Vast, will not allow his small, clumsy, but inventive son to do so. Regardless, Hiccup ventures out into battle and downs a mysterious Night Fury dragon with his invention, but can’t bring himself to kill it. Instead, Hiccup and the dragon, whom he dubs Toothless, begin a friendship that would open up both their worlds as the observant boy learns that his people have misjudged the species. But even as the two each take flight in their own way, they find that they must fight the destructive ignorance plaguing their world.”
In other movie news, the Mortal Kombat 2 movie was recently rated R for strong violence, gore and language.
How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t have a release date yet but it’s set to arrive in cinemas in 2025. Watch the trailer below:
