A live-action Pokemon series is apparently still in development at Netflix. The existence of this television series was reported back in 2021, though we’ve heard nothing of it until now. According to a new rumour, Netflix is pushing forward with the show.
The report originates from leaker DanielRPK, who claims that a live-action Pokemon series is in development at the streaming company, Netflix. The show will seemingly not feature Ash Ketchum or an original character but rather Red, the player character from early Pokemon games. It’s worth noting that DanielRPK has a mixed track record when it comes to the accuracy of their leaks, so take everything here with a grain of salt until we get confirmation from Netflix directly.
After the success of the live-action Pokemon: Detective Pikachu movie, Hollywood opened up to the idea of exploring Pokemon further in live-action format. While a sequel to Detective Pikachu hasn’t materialised yet, it’s possible that Nintendo still wants to push the IP further into live-action territory much like its upcoming Legend of Zelda movie. It makes sense that a show featuring Red (and presumably based on the original first-gen games) would be in the works, tapping into a market that isn’t familiar with the origins of the franchise.

Nintendo saw quite a bit of success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie last year, which went on to make over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office and become one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. A Legend of Zelda live-action movie is also in the works from The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball. We might have to wait a while longer for a new Pokemon project to get off the ground.
