A Local Movie Tops The SA Easter Weekend Box Office Top 10

Shazam was dominating the South African cinema circuit until a local movie dethroned it from the top spot this past Easter Weekend. Kandasamys – The Wedding is a local movie that debuted over the Easter Weekend and took the number one spot on the South African box office top 10.

Before we get to the rest of the top 10, Captain Marvel continues to be the highest grossing movie currently on the South African box office, earning R 46 224 399 domestically to date.

10. Pet Sematary

This thriller based on the book by Stephen King also made its debut over the Easter Weekend but didn’t manage to make such an impressive mark like the local movie, which premiered at number one.

Pet Sematary stars Jason Clarke as Dr. Louis Creed who, with his wife (portrayed by Amy Seimetz) and two young children move to a quieter town in order for them to slow down and reconnect with each other. However, their new home, which is on the edge of a forest, holds dark secrets.

9. Hellboy

Making its South African box office debut last week is the new movie based on the Hellboy graphic novels by Mike Mignola. Hellboy has not been getting favourable reviews, and it seems the box office response isn’t heating up too much either, with a number 5 debut on the top 10. Now, the movie has slipped all the way down to number 9.

8. Dog’s Way Home

Moving up from its number 10 debut is this family movie. When a dog and her owner become separated, she has to find her way back to him. On her adventure, she encounters other beings, whose lives she changes forever.

7. Dumbo

Dumbo debuted at number 2 and has now moved down to number 7 in its fourth week on the South African cinema market. This live-action adaptation of the classic Disney movie stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Danny DeVito.

6. After

The fan fiction, which turned the One Direction member into a punk version – Hardin Scott -, has become very popular and the movie is sure to capture a few fans. It stars Josephine Langford as Tessa Young and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin as Hardin Scott.

5. The Queen’s Corgi

Making its box office debut is this sweet story about (as the title suggests) the queen’s dog, Rex. Rex is chased out of the palace and needs to find his way home. This animation movie is definitely one to watch with the whole family.

4. Captain Marvel

The Captain Marvel movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and held the top spot in South Africa for four consecutive weeks, before being dethroned by the Shazam movie.

3. Little

Making its box office debut, Little follows the story of tech mogul Jordan Sanders (portrayed by Regina Hall). She’s a pretty hard-hitter, feared by most of her staff. But everything hilariously changes when she is magically transformed into a 13-year-old version of herself.

2. Shazam

Shazam is finally dethroned by the new local movie, after having held the top spot at the South African box office for two weeks in a row. Starring Zachary Levi as the title character, this is one of the most lighthearted DC movies released, maybe ever. Not only is Shazam a fun superhero movie it also has a lot of action and even some heartfelt moments. It also features some fun video game references, which gamers will love to spot.

1. Kandasamys – The Wedding

This local movie revolves around two neighbouring families – the Kandasamys and the Naidoos. After Jennifer Kandasamy and Shanthi Naidoo become friends again, their children Jodi and Prishen fall in love and a big wedding gets planned. As weddings can be stressful, lots of hilarious drama ensues.
