Lord of the Rings MMO in Development at Amazon Games

A new AAA MMO based on The Lord of the Rings is currently in development at Amazon Games. The game is being developed by Amazon Games Orange County, the studio behind the open-world MMO New World, currently set to launch on both consoles and PC. Some details about the game’s setting and story were also shared.

According to Amazon Games, the new Lord of the Rings MMO will be “an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy.” It’s speculated that players will be able to choose classes based on one of the various races of Middle-earth and excel at specific types of combat and gameplay.

Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann spoke about the game a bit as well as confirm that Amazon is expanding its relationship with Embracer Group on the Tomb Raider IP:

“Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world. We’re also pleased to be expanding our relationship with Embracer Group following our Tomb Raider deal last year, as they’ve proven to be excellent collaborators.”

Last August, Embracer Group officially acquired the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit IPs though it looks like it’s partnering with Amazon Games to bring more video game adaptations to the market.

In related news, Warner Bros Discovery previously announced that it plans to develop new Lord of the Rings movies, aspiring to turn it into a franchise as big as Star Wars.

It’s unclear when we can expect an official reveal of the new Lord of the Rings MMO from Amazon Games or how far along in development it actually is, so we’ll just have to wait and see if it impresses.
