Lords of the Fallen, the latest Soulslike action-RPG from developer HexWorks and publisher CI Games, is finally out today. The first big choice that players must make upon booting up the game is which class to play as. In total, there are nine starting classes to choose from with four “secret” classes unlocked during gameplay. For this breakdown, we’re mainly going to look at the nine starting classes and hopefully give you a better idea of what each entails.
Like many Soulslike RPGs before it, Lords of the Fallen has a good amount of flexible classes that can be reshaped throughout your playthrough, so don’t feel any pressure for picking and sticking to one at the beginning. What matters is what skills you decide to level up over the course of your journey. However, these nine starting classes should give you a good foundation to build on.

All Lords of the Fallen Starting Classes
Hallowed Knight
- Strength: 12
- Agility: 8
- Endurance: 15
- Vitality: 11
- Radiance: 9
- Inferno: 8
The first class in Lords of the Fallen (that will undoubtedly be a popular choice for players) is the Hallowed Knight, your bog-standard holy warrior class that exchanges mobility for physical strength and Radiant magic. While it doesn’t start out with any Radiance abilities – those must be found in-game – its proficiency with a sword and board makes it an ideal starting class for beginners who want to balance offence and defence with some magic to even things out.
Udirangr Warwolf
- Strength: 16
- Agility: 10
- Endurance: 13
- Vitality: 10
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 8
The Udirangr Warwolf is a mouthful but make no mistake, it’s one of the deadliest classes in Lords of the Fallen. If you’re the barbarian-type to charge into battle with a two-handed weapon and light armour, this is the perfect class for you. It’s a bit of a glass cannon because of its low armour and no shield, though it makes up for it in raw physical strength and a lot more mobility than other tankier classes.
Partisan
- Strength: 13
- Agility: 12
- Endurance: 12
- Vitality: 12
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 8
The Partisan is the most malleable class of the game. It’s a jack-of-all-trades option that offers a little bit of everything for players who aren’t sure about what build to go for yet. You’ll start out with a flail melee weapon, a shield and a crossbow for ranged damage along with some consumable berries for stamina regeneration. It’s not particularly great at anything but players who want to go in blind and only decide at a later stage what kind of playstyle is best for them might find the Partisan a good starter.
Mournstead Infantry
- Strength: 12
- Agility: 14
- Endurance: 12
- Vitality: 11
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 8
If you’re a fan of the Amazon class in Diablo 2, you’ll find a lot to love about the Mournstead Infantry. Equipped with a handy forward-thrusting spear and throwable javelins for decent ranged damage and a small shield, this class is a good choice for players who prefer speed over strength. The good news is you’ll be expertly dodging and rolling out of harm’s way most of the time but that comes at the cost of having good, upfront damage output.
Blackfeather Ranger
- Strength: 11
- Agility: 13
- Endurance: 11
- Vitality: 10
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 8
The Blackfeather Ranger is a very obvious throwback to Bloodborne (just look at that drip). Where it might lack in being a tanky beast, it more than makes up for it with agility, making it quite a versatile class with an even spread across all of its skills. Equipped with an ax and a bow and arrows, the Ranger is all about, well, ranging and keeping yourself as far away from enemies as possible. Thanks to additional ammunition pouches, this class also won’t run out of arrows too quickly which is especially helpful in the early hours of the game.
Exiled Stalker
- Strength: 9
- Agility: 16
- Endurance: 11
- Vitality: 11
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 8
The Exiled Stalker is listed as one of three advanced starting classes and for a good reason. It’s a class specifically for players already familiar with the Soulslike genre as it leans into a dual-wielding dex build with almost no defence options. On the bright side, it’s extremely agile and prioritises timely dodging and efficient strikes but that requires players to really be good at dodging and deflecting to begin with. I wouldn’t recommend Exile Stalker unless you’re confident in your experience as a Soulslike player.
Orian Preacher
- Strength: 10
- Agility: 8
- Endurance: 9
- Vitality: 11
- Radiance: 18
- Inferno: 8
The next advanced class is the Orian Preacher and the first proper mage class of Lords of the Fallen. While it comes equipped with a hammer that deals decent holy damage and scales with your Radiance stat, its bread and butter is holy damage and using a variety of Radiant spells to get by. It also lacks decent defence so it’s yet another glass cannon option but thankfully, there are enough Radiant spells that you can acquire to make the Orian Preacher very fun and very deadly when scaled correctly.
Pyric Cultist
- Strength: 9
- Agility: 8
- Endurance: 11
- Vitality: 9
- Radiance: 8
- Inferno: 18
The final advanced class of the starting roster is the Pyric Cultist. Similar to the Orian Preacher, this class is good for magic-focused attacks as it scales with Inferno. As the name implies, most of its attacks are based on fire damage but the selection of pyro-magic is notably lower than Radiance spells. Luckily, fire hits hard in Lords of the Fallen and you’ll only need Infernal Orb and your trusty fireball in the early sections of the game, though it might be a tough journey.
Condemned
- Strength: 9
- Agility: 9
- Endurance: 9
- Vitality: 9
- Radiance: 9
- Inferno: 9
For the masochists out there, the Condemned class is the hardest class to play in the game because it’s basically a husk. Every single stat sits at 9, meaning it’s not exactly proficient at anything other than being a complete blank slate for a torturous playthrough. You’re probably not going to want Condemned as your starting class unless you’re very familiar with the Deprived from Dark Souls and just want the squeeze the most challenge out of your experience.
Lords of the Fallen is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
