Martha is Dead is Getting a Movie Adaptation

The controversial 2022 psychological thriller game, Martha is Dead, is getting a movie adaptation. The game’s Italian studio LKA is joining forces with Swedish film production company Studios Extraordinaires and UK publisher Wired Productions to create the movie. No release date has been announced yet.

Martha is Dead released back in February 2022 and quickly attracted a lot of attention due to the gory and explicit nature of some of its content, which includes bodily mutilation and a sub-plot revolving around miscarriage. The story follows Giulia, a young woman who is trying to get to the bottom of the sudden and mysterious death of her sister, Martha. The detailed visuals were praised but many felt that its disturbing content went a step too far, leading to the PlayStation versions of the game being heavily censored.

LKA founder and the game’s writer and designer Luca Dalcò released a statement about the movie adaptation:

“Every element of Martha is Dead was created with extraordinary precision and care. The narrative’s complexity was meticulously planned, visualised and even shaped with a cinematic quality in mind. Bringing this to life as a film is a dream come true.”

The Steam description for Martha is Dead reads:

“Martha Is Dead is a dark first-person psychological thriller, set in 1944 Italy, that blurs the lines between reality, superstition and the tragedy of war. As conflict intensifies between German and Allied forces, the desecrated body of a woman is found drowned… Martha! Martha is dead, and her twin sister Giulia, the young daughter of a German soldier, must alone deal with the acute trauma of loss and the fallout from her murder. The hunt for the truth is shrouded by mysterious folklore and the extreme horror of war that draws ever closer.”
