Marvel Studios is Reducing Output of MCU Movies and TV Shows

Marvel Studios and Disney have announced that they will be reducing the number of MCU movies and TV shows released every year. This follows a string of critical misfires since Avengers: Endgame, which also produced some box office lows for the companies like The Marvels. In an effort to reduce the clutter and trim down projects, Marvel Studios is now dialling the amount of MCU content back significantly.

As reported by Twitter/X account DiscussingFilm, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that it will reduce the output of future MCU projects to 2-3 movies per year and 2 TV shows per year. 2024 is a relatively dry year for Marvel Studios as Deadpool and Wolverine is the only MCU movie scheduled to release this year.

As fans pointed out, there’s no point in reducing the quantity when there’s no increase in the quality of the movies and TV shows – something that Marvel Studios is hopefully taking into consideration when spacing out its projects now.

In other news, Breaking Bad and Far Cry 6 actor Giancarlo Esposito recently announced that he had joined the MCU in an undisclosed role, though he made it clear that he wasn’t playing Professor X, seemingly addressing old fan-casting rumours. Disney also revealed the main cast of the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, consisting of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.

In the past, Marvel Studios would release between 2-3 movies per year in phases 1-3, so this will hopefully allow the studio to better flesh out the next overarching story in the MCU. Meanwhile, James Gunn is ready to trade blows with Marvel with the formation of DC Studios and a revamp of the DC cinematic universe, beginning with a new Superman movie in 2025.
