Marvel Studios Kicks Off ‘Mutant Era’ in the MCU

Marvel Studios is seemingly ditching the multiverse saga and going all-in on the ‘mutant era’ for the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the release of Deadpool and Wolverine this week. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently confirmed that the era of mutants has begun in the MCU. Every movie that will release after Deadpool and Wolverine “will be the Mutant era coming into the MCU,” says Feige.

As reported by The Playlist, Kevin Feige talked about the future of the MCU at a press conference. “Also, the ‘after’ is clearly – now that we have characters from the X-Men world, the Mutants – we haven’t had access to before,” said Feige. “So, this is the beginning of that, and every [movie] post Deadpool and Wolverine will be the Mutant era coming into the MCU.”

Feige is referring to the fact that the X-Men property and all associated characters belonged to 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the company. With the merger, Marvel Studios was given the entire X-Men catalogue including Deadpool, Wolverine and other notable mutants. It’s taken years but it finally looks like Marvel is ready to bring the X-Men into the MCU in full force.

We’ve had teases of it before – Evan Peters’ Quicksilver made a cameo in the show WandaVision, somewhat – but with Hugh Jackman on board, it signals a greater push to integrate 20th Century’s X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at large.

As for the multiverse saga which was the big focus for the MCU post-Endgame, it’s unclear if Feige wants to continue that storyline, especially since Jonathan Majors, the actor behind the saga’s main villain Kang, was let go from his role due to charges against him for domestic violence. It’s possible that Marvel Studios wants a complete refresh of the overarching narrative in the current MCU phases which is why the mutant era is so important for the studio now.
