Marvel Studios Reportedly Shifting Focus to Video Games

Marvel Studios is reportedly shifting its focus internally to bolster its gaming division. Apart from its Marvel Cinematic Universe in film and television, the company is apparently well aware that its gaming division isn’t reaching its full potential. According to a new report, with games like EA’s Black Panther and Iron Man on the way in addition to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, video games will be a big priority for Marvel Studios going forward.

The report originates from Twitter leaker CanWeGetSomeToast, who claims that Marvel Studios is internally shifting its focus towards big-budget video games. The leaker responded to a tweet that highlighted the various Marvel failures in gaming including the cancellation of Marvel’s Avengers, the commercial disappointment of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Midnight Suns which flopped on release, among many other projects.

The leaker’s comment on Marvel’s future plans for gaming reads:

“Marvel is PAINFULLY aware of how their video games division hasn’t been reaching its potential overall. There have been whispers of an internal shift for Marvel to focus on games. The new EA Black Panther and Iron Man games will be the start of a push for something BIG.”

Dead Space remake developer EA Motive confirmed back in September last year that it was developing a single-player Iron Man game. EA apparently signed a deal to make three Marvel games, starting with Iron Man. The second one we know of is Black Panther, which was announced in July this year. It’s being developed by new studio Cliffhanger Games, which is led by former Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War boss Kevin Stephens.

Beyond that, Insomniac Games will release Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 later this month which is potentially set to be one of the biggest games of the year. Thereafter, Insomniac will also release Marvel’s Wolverine.

If Marvel Studios plans to focus more on its gaming division and unlock its full potential, we might see more Marvel-related announcements pop up from various studios in the coming months and years. As with all rumours and reports, take this with a pinch of salt.
