Marvel’s Avengers from developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix was first released in 2019, promising frequent new drops of free superheroes in the form of DLC to add to the game’s massive roster. While that progress has been expanding slowly with the release of Hawkeye, Kate Bishop and recently Black Panther, Spider-Man is expected to swing into the game later this year. According to the game’s senior producer, the superhero will come with his own cutscenes and story content.

Speaking on Marvel’s Avengers‘ official Discord recently, the game’s senior producer Dan Matlack briefly spoke about the upcoming Spider-Man DLC and what it might entail. This will include cutscenes, story content and challenges unique to the superhero. Matlack wrote:
“Spider-Man is what we call an ‘event’ so he will have cut scenes and a story for sure.”
Crystal Dynamics associate art director Jeff Adams also spoke about the DLC in a PlayStation Blog post in August, promising that Spider-Man will swing into Marvel’s Avengers complete with his own in-game event. This will be further elaborated on in multiple challenges that the hero will partake in, testing his skills and abilities. Adams wrote:
“When Spider-Man comes to our stable of heroes, we’ll be marking his debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers. The event is comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results. And like the rest of our heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall crawler a reality.”
Spider-Man was originally meant to launch as free DLC exclusive to PlayStation owners earlier this year but was delayed due to the ongoing global pandemic and the challenges that have posed for the game’s development. Crystal Dynamics has once again reassured fans that the web-slinger will still release before the end of 2021 as part of their planned roadmap, though plans could very well change. They’ve been mostly silent about the status of the exciting DLC, but if it’s targeting a late 2021 release, we’ll surely hear more about it soon.
