Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Gets New Exploration and Combat Gameplay

Eidos Montreal has released two new gameplay videos for their upcoming game Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, detailing exploration, platforming, upgrades, outfits and more. Ahead of the game’s release on 26 October 2021, Square Enix has been in full marketing mode and we’ve finally got a better understanding of how the finer details, like the meat of combat and upgrading, will work.

In terms of combat gameplay, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t too different to chain-linking attacks as previously seen in game’s like Final Fantasy XV. Players will always assume the role of Star-Lord but can issue commands to the rest of the Guardians for big link attacks. Each Guardian performs differently in combat too, playing to their various strengths and weaknesses. Groot controls the battlefield and provides openings, Drax is the designated Leeroy Jenkins tank-type who will rush in head-first, Gamora is faster and can perform quick melee combos, and Rocket Raccoon serves as both your upgrade guru as well as a weapons specialist.

Star-Lord himself is an all-rounder character when in combat, capable of controlling the field with ranged weapons while also dashing in for melee strikes. The crux of the gameplay is how well you’ll synergize Star-Lord with the rest of your team, though.

As for exploration, Eidos Montreal revealed that platforming around various new and familiar Marvel worlds will be key to exploring and adventuring. When you’re not out in the wild, the Milano acts as your base of operations, where you can explore the ship, engage with the other Guardians, and run into random (often hilarious) events. When you visit Rocket Raccoon, you’ll be able to upgrade your weapons and abilities, providing perfect opportunities for players to create their own build that caters to their playstyle. Each Guardian can be upgraded depending on your playstyle too.

Finally, Eidos Montreal confirmed that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will come with over forty outfits from the comic book universe, with some fan-favourites thrown into the mix too (some outfits will be unlocked early if you pre-order the game). These can be unlocked throughout the campaign and switched for each Guardian.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will release on 26 October 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
