Square Enix says that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which launched back in October last year, didn’t perform as well as the publisher expected. Even with positive reviews, game sales for the single-player story-driven game were much lower than Square Enix predicted them to be.
During its Q3 results for 2021, Director of Square Enix Yosuke Matsuda said that “despite positive reviews, game sales at launch undershot our initial expectations”.

There are a lot of factors that could have contributed to the slow sales of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. October was quite a busy month for game releases but the big elephant in the room is definitely the failure of Marvel’s Avengers.
Clearly, players were burnt by Square Enix’s previous Marvel game which was released back in 2020. Marvel’s Avengers hasn’t done too well mainly due to its lacklustre gameplay and poor post-launch support. Clearly. players who invested in the game at launch didn’t want to make the same mistake again with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Matsuda says that while launch sales for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy were low, sales have slowly picked up over November and December. This is most likely thanks to various sales for the game which have been live over the past few months. Gamers, while sceptical at launch, will most likely pick up the game when discounted.
You should really give Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy your time. I love the game even though the combat felt a bit samey after a while. You can read my full review here.
