Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Devs Explain Why Release Date Wasn’t at PlayStation Showcase

Insomniac Games and PlayStation finally blew the lid open on an extensive gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at the last PlayStation Showcase. Unfortunately, fans were left wanting more as a release date wasn’t announced apart from its fall 2023 window. Insomniac has now come forward to explain exactly why the studio didn’t announce a release date yet – and the answer is fairly straight-forward.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar addressed the elephant in the room: the game’s release date and why it didn’t show up at the PlayStation Showcase. Despite launching in just a few months, fans are still being kept in the dark about when they can get their hands on the anticipated superhero sequel.

Intihar has now explained that it was simply a matter of announcing a release date when the studio was fairly confident that it could hit that date. “It’s really just making sure that we’re really confident that when we announce the date, we’re going to hit it,” said Intihar. “It’s really just about that.”

At face value, this might seem like something negative. After all, most gaming companies that come forward with this kind of information is usually followed up by a delay. In this case, it doesn’t seem likely that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be delayed in any way. Insomniac Games could simply be monitoring the busy schedule for the fall 2023 gaming release window and making informed decisions about when to strategically release the game so that it’s spaced out enough to avoid potential clashes with other big releases around that time frame.

In related news, Insomniac Games promised that fans will hear about a release date “soon“. If you’re curious about just how big the open-world sandbox will be this time, the developer also explained that the map size will be twice as big as the first game as the sequel now covers the extended areas of Queens and Brooklyn.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches in fall 2023 exclusively for PS5.
