Marvel's Spider-Man 2 MJ Face Model Mary Jane Swap

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Didn’t Swap The Face Model for MJ

Insomniac Games and PlayStation recently dropped a story trailer for the upcoming superhero game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which gave fans a closer look at the characters. However, some fans noticed that Mary Jane Watson’s appearance looked a little different compared to her appearance in the first game. Insomniac has now come out to clarify that it didn’t swap the face model for MJ like they did for Peter Parker after Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered launched on PS5.

As noted by IGN, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 marketing director James Stevenson confirmed multiple times on Twitter that Mary Jane has the same face model (Stephanie Tyler Jones) and voice actress (Laura Bailey) from the first game. The only reason she looks so different to players now is the fact that the model is an updated version and not the same character render from before.

Since Insomniac Games stated that the model and voice actress weren’t swapped out, the changes many perceived in the story trailer are likely due to lighting, longer hair and better visuals granted by the PS5’s capabilities. The same could be said about Peter Parker and Miles Morales whose character models look much more refined in the sequel, mainly attributed to Insomniac having better visuals to work with this time.

We can’t talk about face models without mentioning the controversy surrounding Insomniac’s decision to replace Peter’s model with a new one for the remastered version of Marvel’s Spider-Man. Insomniac claimed that this was done to “get a better match to Peter Parker/Spider-Man actor Yuri Lowenthal’s facial capture.” However, many fans felt like the original model for Peter was a much better fit.

In related news, Sony recently unveiled some new PS5 face plates and a limited edition DualSense controller themed around Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on 20 October 2023 exclusively for PS5.
