Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac’s Highest Rated Game in Nearly 20 Years

The review embargo for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 officially dropped yesterday with dozens of reviews pouring in calling it one of the best superhero games ever made. Those praises have now earned developer Insomniac Games its highest rated game in nearly 20 years and the first game to past the 90 average score on Metacritic since 2004’s Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal.

As of writing, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 holds a collective score of 91 out of 100 on the review aggregate website Metacritic based on 120 reviews. This is significant because it’s the first Insomniac game in nearly two decades to score above a 90 on Metacritic, with the last being 2004’s Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal that also scored a 91. Previously released Insomniac games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales both scored 87 and 85 on Metacritic, respectively.

Over on OpenCritic, it also holds an overall score of 91 based on 96 reviews with a 100% recommended rating from critics. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s impressive reviews follow 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok, which scored 93 and earned it a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards (but fell short to From Software’s Elden Ring) – safe to say, it’s another critical hit for PlayStation’s first-party releases this generation.

In our review, we called Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 “something grander” than your standard sandbox superhero game:

“I think the biggest takeaway from my time with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is how it has grown from a superhero sandbox game into something grander. It constantly surprised me, each and every mission was more exciting than the last and the layers of story to unravel here make the game a love letter to Spider-Man fans. Not to mention the overarching universe that is being built here makes the future even more exciting for the series.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on 20 October 2023 for PS5. Watch our video review below:
