Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 recently made a big splash at last month’s PlayStation Showcase where developer Insomniac Games showed off a decent chunk of gameplay, including Peter’s new symbiote powers. While the game is expected to go bigger and hopefully better in the gameplay department, Insomniac seems to be putting a lot of effort into giving players a larger open-world sandbox to explore – an expanded map of New York City that’s twice the size of the first game.
Speaking in a recent interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar confirmed that the map size of the sequel, which now encompasses the expanded areas of Queens and Brooklyn as shown in the recent gameplay trailer, is about twice as large as the map of the first game. Insomniac explained that these areas are largely residential and a break from the bustling metropolis and high-rise buildings of Manhattan.

Intihar’s full comment on beefing up the map size in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reads:
“We’ve added Queens and Brooklyn this time, so roughly speaking the map size is about two times larger than the previous titles. Since these two areas are somewhat smaller and residential, I think you’ll find them different from Manhattan. We’ve prepared some unexpected situations we haven’t done before, like a battle on the river between two of the cities, so I hope you’ll look forward to them.”
The recent gameplay showcase for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 partially took place in a suburban area of Queens where Peter donned his new black symbiote suit and took on a group of Kraven’s goons. The battle against Lizard shifted to the river between Queens and Manhattan, focusing on Miles Morales chasing down the creature. It was an impressive showing but we have yet to see the magnitude of the open-world. We can surely expect more trailers to arrive closer to the game’s release this fall.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is currently in development exclusively for PS5.
