Scalpers have grabbed the limited edition PS5 console covers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and are now selling them on eBay for triple the price. As soon as pre-orders went live for the console bundle and accessories, many noticed that console covers were the first items to sell out quickly. Within a few seconds, most major retailers were out of stock. We now know that scalpers were behind the large sweep of sold-out covers.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 console covers first sold out quickly in Asia and Europe, followed my mutiple other regions. According to buyers on forums and message boards, there was a lot of frustration around the speed in which covers mysteriously sold out at retailers. As reported by GameSpot, it turns out that scalpers are now selling the covers on eBay for triple the price of its original cost.

Many of the console covers listed on eBay have already been sold to fans desperate to get their hands on the items. At the time of writing, the cheapest cover you can buy from a scalper on eBay is $147 (which is a lot more than the original $65 it actually costs).
Unfortunately, developer Insomniac Games informed fans on Twitter yesterday that stock is unlikely to be replenished, meaning the limited edition covers probably won’t be available to buy from retailers anymore. That’s where scalpers are banking on the limited quantity and lack of availability.
Scalping was a major issue that plagued PS5 consoles when the hardware was released in limited quantities per wave during the pandemic. Buyers voiced their frustration over retail websites and Sony not implementing more stringent measures to deal with bots that enabled scalpers to scoop up consoles in massive amounts. It looks like no lessons were learned from the last few years.
Despite the high demand for the limited edition console covers, we can only recommend that buyers look out for scalpers. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like there will be any other options left.
