Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Sells 2.5 Million Copies on Launch Day

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the latest open-world superhero game from Insomniac Games, had a pretty spectacular launch day. According to Sony, it’s now the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in history, managing to sell 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours.

PlayStation recently announced the news on its Twitter/X account, revealing that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 managed to sell 2.5 million copies in just one day. To put that into perspective, God of War Ragnarok sold 5.1 million copies in its debut week, which previously held the title for the “fastest-selling” PlayStation game of all time. Sony didn’t provide the exact day one sales figures for Ragnarok, though we can safely assume that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 outsold it by a good margin.

Sony’s records have been shattered with almost every major release from its first-party studios. Before God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part II sold 4 million copies in three days and held the title of fastest-selling PlayStation game. Going a bit further back than that, the first Marvel’s Spider-Man sold 3.3 million copies in three days.

Since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still a fresh release, we’ll have wait another week or two to find out how sales across multiple days and one week compared to the previous record-holders. While it’s possible that the superhero sequel could fall shy of Ragnarok‘s numbers in one week, the popularity of the Spider-Man brand should be enough to surpass that milestone.

In related news, Sony kicked off some clever marketing by occupying the Last Vegas Sphere to promote Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with a stunning display looming over the city.
