Mass Effect 4 Dev Says It Wasn’t Teasing the Return of Shepard

A couple of days ago, an N7 lithograph appeared on BioWare’s website which might’ve accidentally teased the return of Commander Shepard in Mass Effect 4, according to the item’s description. However, the description was corrected and now, BioWare veteran Mike Gamble says that they weren’t teasing the return of Shepard in the next game after all.

Gamble recently clarified that the item description for the lithograph which teased Shepard’s return in Mass Effect 4 was simply a mistake. “Yeah, that was a mistake. Fixed. The original thing was written by the people who run the store and aren’t familiar with the game,” said Gamble.

BioWare is hard at work on Dragon Age 4 right now, with the next anticipated Mass Effect game seemingly still in the prototyping phase. However, thanks to the game’s reveal trailer at The Game Awards in 2020, fans have been speculating about where the saga could go next.

Some fans already theorised that Commander Shepard may have survived the ordeal at the end of Mass Effect 3, and would make a grand reappearance in Mass Effect 4. After all, the trailer showed the Asari Liara T’Soni, though that could simply be related to the Asari’s natural prolonged lifespan that could set the next game hundreds of years in the future. This doesn’t necessarily mean Shepard will return.

However, Gamble’s wording also left fans a bit bewildered as he doesn’t directly confirm that Commander Shepard won’t be in Mass Effect 4 in some capacity, simply stating that it was a “mistake” and nothing more than that.

We currently have no information about the next Mass Effect title other than the fact that Liara might be back. The rest of the cast hasn’t been confirmed either, giving us no indication of the game’s time frame. Needless to say, it’s going to be a long wait until we get answers.

Mass Effect 4 is currently in development.
