McDonald’s Australia is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. As part of the celebration festivities, the company created 50 customized PS5 DualSense Controllers called the “McDualSense” (pictured above). The controller features a dual-tone casing with a large fries on one grip and a Big Mac on the other. There is a white half and a red half with some bright yellow buttons to boast. However, as cool as this controller looks, Sony is not happy with it at all.

McDonald’s has been forced to cancel the McDualSense and pull the 50 controllers out of its prize pool during the company’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. According to McDonald’s, Sony has issued the company with a cease and desist. In a statement, McDonald’s claims that PlayStation did not authorise the use of the DualSense Controller in the promotional materials and the giveaway has been delayed.

It is unclear whether or not Sony had a problem with McDonald’s use of a custom DualSense controller for the giveaway or the fact they had the device as part of the promotion. We know that Sony tends to fight back when a company announces any sort of customization for the PS5 console and accessories. They have threatened to sue D-Brand for their skins, they closed down another custom faceplate brand last year for selling black faceplates. The list goes on.

The statement from McDonald’s regarding the McDualSense reads:

Unfortunately, McDonald’s stream week has been postponed and won’t be going ahead this Sunday. We are unable to confirm a new date for the proposed event at this time. We will have some great prizing including Macca’s 50th Birthday Hoodies and 50 channel subscriptions for each streamer to give away. We will be in contact with the new timing as soon as we have it confirmed.

Sony PlayStation has not authorised the use of its controller in promotional materials related to the proposed Stream Week event and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. McDonald’s stream week has been postponed and Sony PlayStation controllers will not be included in the giveaway.

If McDonald’s gets the green light from Sony then Australian gamers could get a chance to win one of fifty truly rare and unique DualSense controllers. However, if Sony says no then McDonald’s still has 50 most-wanted custom-designed controllers out there. Who gets them? We don’t know.
