Spider-Man 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially happening with filming scheduled to begin next year. The sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home will once again star Tom Holland as the webslinger, though there’s no details about the plot or a potential release date yet.
Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tom Holland confirmed that Spider-Man 4 was moving forward. “Next summer we start shooting,” he said. “Everything’s good to go. We’re nearly there. It’s super exciting; I can’t wait.”
Naturally, Marvel Studios will want to keep plot details or any potential cameos a secret. Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home: the company already did a fantastic job keeping the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield a secret, to the point where the community even questioned leaks when they were brought up. This might also be another chance for Garfield to put on the Spider-Man suit as he’s expressed interest in playing the iconic comic book character again.
That said, there’s room for a new Spider-Man to enter the MCU in the fourth movie as well. Back in November 2021, Holland stated that he’d like Marvel Studios to move onto Miles Morales as the next on-screen webslinger. Miles has seen a surge in popularity thanks to Sony’s critically acclaimed animated Spider-Verse movies as well as Insomniac Games’ video game depiction of the character, where he appeared in both his standalone game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation.
It’s possible that Spider-Man 4 could set up the introduction to Miles Morales which would make perfect sense as Peter, as of the ending of No Way Home, has been forgotten by almost everyone including MJ and Ned due to Doctor Strange’s spell. It could also mark a “passing of the torch” onto Miles, hopefully giving Holland an opportunity to complete his character arc and step away from the MCU.
