Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is reportedly in talks to direct Spider-Man 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The previous three Spider-Man movies in the MCU starring Tom Holland were all directed by Jon Watts, though it seems like Marvel Studios is seeking a new director to take the wheel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is apparently in talks to helm Spider-Man 4, which doesn’t have an official title yet. The report states that he’s only in negotiations to direct the movie so he hasn’t officially signed on yet. At one point, Cretton was attached to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before Marvel Studios wiped it from its release schedule, replacing it with Avengers: Doomsday as the fifth Avengers movie instead.
The last MCU Spider-Man movie, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, became a massive critical and commercial success on release. Using the multiverse as a plot device, the movie was able to assemble most of the villains from the older Spider-Man movies outside of the MCU including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who played Spider-Man before Holland, also reprised their roles as the webslingers.
While Cretton might be staying on the MCU, he has also set his sights on universes outside of Marvel. Earlier this year, it was announced that Cretton would direct a live-action Naruto movie for Lionsgate, based on the popular manga and anime by Masashi Kishimoto. Shang-Chi was praised for its action sequences and martial arts so it makes sense that the director would tackle a stylistically similar project.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday will recast Robert Downey Jr. but not as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Instead, the actor has been cast as the villain Doctor Doom. It’s unclear how this will work but we suspect the multiverse will play a big part in that explanation.
