Metaphor: ReFantazio, the latest RPG from Persona developer Atlus, has sold one million copies on its launch day. Despite being a new IP without the Persona branding, the game turned out to be quite a massive success for Atlus as it recently shared the impressive milestone on social media.
“Today, October 11th, Metaphor: ReFantazio total worldwide sales (packaged version shipped + download version sold) have surpassed one million copies,” reads the official statement from Atlus (via PlayStation LifeStyle). “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported. We hope you will continue to support Metaphor: ReFantazio and Atlus Co, Ltd.”
Metaphor: ReFantazio wasn’t just a financial success but a critical success as well. As of writing, the RPG has a 92 average rating on OpenCritic with 99% of reviews recommending the game. This also ranks it behind the highest-rated games of 2024, trailing closely behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (93) and Astro Bot (95). Early buzz suggests that Metaphor: ReFantazio could be a strong contender for Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
The strong day one sales of Metaphor: ReFantazio was undoubtedly helped by the free demo that Atlus released prior to the game’s launch, which let players venture through the opening sections of the game to give them a taste of the stylish turn-based combat, exploration, characters and story.
The official description for Metaphor: ReFantazio reads:
“From the creative minds behind Persona 3, 4, and 5 comes Metaphor: ReFantazio, a unique fantasy world, where your protagonist will journey alongside his fairy companion, Gallica, to lift the curse from the kingdom’s lost prince.
