Nintendo recently confirmed that Metroid Dread is now the best-selling game in the series’ history. Nintendo’s recent earnings call revealed the information, managing to sell 2.9 million copies since the game’s release late last year. This puts it 60,000 copies ahead of the previous best-selling game in the series, Metroid Prime.
Metroid Dread was released last October as a revitalisation of the series’ iconic 2D platforming style. On top of receiving record-breaking sales, it garnered critical acclaim upon release, ranking among the best in the series. You can read more about that in our full review.

Nintendo continued to support Metroid Dread well after launch, receiving updates that added new difficulty modes as well as 3 different Boss Rush modes, apart from the usual bug fixes.
Developer MercurySteam is currently working on a new dark fantasy RPG, according to a press release from 505 Games’ parent company Digital Bros. Little else is known about the project, though since it still appears to be in the early stages of development, we might be waiting a while longer to see it in action. It’s also unconfirmed if this will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive like Metroid Dread.
Meanwhile, it’s also rumoured that Nintendo is working on a remaster of the original Metroid Prime trilogy, which might release before the end of the year according to insiders. The Prime series deviated from the formula of the past Metroid games by transforming the gameplay to a first-person shooter as opposed to a 2D side-scroller. A fourth Prime entry, which was announced by Nintendo several years ago, is still in development.
Metroid Dread is currently available exclusively for Nintendo Switch. At 2.9 million units sold, it’s now the best-selling game in the series and will likely continue to pile on sales.
