Thanks to the Switch 2 and its Joy-Con mouse functionality, the upcoming Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will support aiming with the mouse like you’re playing a PC game. Nintendo confirmed the feature on the official web page for the Switch 2 Edition, saying that it includes mouse support.
During the console reveal, Nintendo showed off this strange mouse feature that was rumoured to be part of the Switch 2 console. However, the company fleshed out its mechanics during the Direct. There are a number of games in the works to support the mouse functionality, and you’ll also be able to test it out in the Nintendo Switch 2 Tour software, which is sold separately for some reason.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is seemingly the first dedicated shooter that includes support for the Joy-Con mouse feature. This means you’ll essentially be able to play the game completely using one hand on the table and the other hand holding a Joy-Con, which will then control movement and abilities.
While it sounds a little strange at first, I am sure the feature will just take some getting used to. Nintendo says, “Play using mouse controls made possible by the Joy-Con 2 controllers or standard button controls. Move the Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse to aim and navigate with greater precision.”
In addition to the mouse support, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is also the first game confirmed to include 4K 120Hz support and two graphics modes on the Switch 2. The website lists two graphics modes including Quality and Performance.
Both Performance modes hit 120Hz on the Switch 2, either by using a 4K 120Hz TV when docked or the console’s 120Hz display while in handheld mode. The Quality modes are then capped at 60FPS at either 4K when docked or 1080p when in handheld mode.
I know graphics modes and mouse support in games has been a feature for a while now but it is still pretty cool to see Nintendo join the club. I am very keen to see just how the mouse support works on the console.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond doesn’t have a release date yet. The game is expected to launch sometime this year on Switch and Switch 2. While it was speculated that it would launch on day-one with the Switch 2, the confirmed launch games don’t include it.
