Microsoft is definitely working on a future where all games and apps exist under the Xbox umbrella. The latest insider update to the Xbox App on Windows now adds Steam games to it when you install them on your PC.
In addition to Steam games, Microsoft has also added Battle.net games to the app, which now integrates those installed games into the Xbox App for easy access.
While the feature is still in testing, Microsoft says that when a player installs a game from a supported PC storefront, it will automatically appear in the “My Library” section in the Xbox App. It will also be in the “Most Recent” tab in the sidebar, and when you play the game, it will feature in recent history and other appropriate menus.
This is the first time that Microsoft has opened up the Xbox App to other PC stores. While you could easily add Microsoft games to Steam, for example, the feature hasn’t allowed the reverse.
Microsoft is pushing hard to make the Xbox experience feel integrated across PC. With the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally, the brand’s focus is to deliver a handheld gaming experience that launches directly into the Xbox UI. So this change to the Xbox app is likely the first move towards that goal.
If users are able to find all their PC games in the Xbox App, which essentially is the Xbox UI on the ROG Xbox Ally, then you’ll never have to access Windows.
If this is something you want to test out, you can download the Xbox Insider Hub on PC and join the PC gaming preview.
