Microsoft has claimed that Marvel’s Wolverine from Sony developer Insomniac Games will launch in 2023. The title was announced last year as being “very early in development”, but a recent comment made by Microsoft indicates that it might be further along than we think. Like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it will release exclusively on PS5.
Marvel’s Wolverine was revealed in a September 2021 PlayStation showcase alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, showing that Insomniac Games were quite busy with numerous projects in development. However, Marvel’s Wolverine was said to be a lot further off from release, but Microsoft has now claimed that it’s not the case as Sony is seemingly targeting a 2023 release for the anticipated PS5 exclusive.

As revealed by Tech4Gamers, Microsoft’s claim appeared in a regulatory filing published this week by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, which is currently investigating the company’s acqusition of Activision Blizzard. When talking about Sony’s strong position in the market, Microsoft stated:
“PlayStation also has a spate of first- and third-party exclusive titles lined up for launch in 2023, including Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Horizon, Final Fantasy XVI and Forspoken.”
This claim could simply be a mistake on Microsoft’s part by assuming Marvel’s Wolverine will release in 2023. On the other hand, the company could have insider knowledge that isn’t made aware to the public yet and may know of secret plans at Sony to launch the game next year.
Either way, Microsoft is still facing ongoing battles in the current situation surrounding the CMA’s approval of the proposed buyout of Activision Blizzard for almost $70 billion. Sony has been challenging the acquisition too, stating that the merger will only harm the industy at large.
Details are scarce about Marvel’s Wolverine but we do know that Insomniac Games is aiming to make it a more mature game than Marvel’s Spider-Man, which might include more intense violence usually associated with the comic book character.
