The upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator Top Gun expansion has finally been given a release date and will coincide with the movie’s launch in late May.
The expansion to Flight Sim will let players “experience first-hand what it’s like to be a U.S. Navy Top Gun” according to Microsoft.
The expansion was set to launch in the later portions of 2021 but it was delayed when it was announced that Paramout Pictures would be delaying Top Gun: Maverick to May 27th this year. The expansion is a clever promotional tie-in for the film but we are here for it.

The expansion was originally announced in the 2021 Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. Mircosoft is also encouraging players to head over to the promotional website where players can create their own “call sign” for the Top Gun-themed expansion.
Flight Simulator’s most recent expansion came at the end of March and focused on Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, and Andorra. The flying simulator prides itself on being as close as possible to the real-world scenery and landscapes, even expressed when a cargo ship was stuck in the Suez Canal in-game as it was in real life. The update also added new high-resolution geographical improvements, elevation data, photogrammetry, and aerial imagery.
Further the update brought with it four new handcrafted airports, 99 points of interest, and 13 new activities including bush trips, discovery flights, and landing challenges.
The Microsoft Flight Simulator Top Gun expansion is set to release on the 25th of May, two days before the theatrical release of the film, and will be free for all owners to download.
