The Windows 10 October update (version 1809) has been popular for all the wrong reasons, from a file deletion bug and more as Microsoft even pulled it and started re-releasing it early last week. It’s not been great and now, Microsoft is blocking Windows 10 update 1809 on some machines, but apparently, it isn’t their fault this time around.
Basically, Microsoft is blaming some Intel display drivers that released before the official re-release of Windows 10 update 1809. Microsoft explains that Intel inadvertently released a display driver that turned on unsupported features in Windows 10. These drivers reportedly released two months ago but they are now causing problems for some users who have upgraded to Windows 10 version 1809. That’s why Microsoft is blocking Windows 10 update 1809 on some PCs that have this Intel driver installed.
Microsoft explained the situation and noted that they are working with Intel to resolve the issue:
In September, Intel inadvertently released versions of their display driver (versions 220.127.116.1144, 18.104.22.16845) that accidentally turned on unsupported features in Windows. After updating to Windows 10, version 1809, audio playback from a monitor or television connected to a PC via HDMI, USB-C or Display port may not function correctly on devices with these drivers.
Microsoft is currently blocking devices with these drivers from installing Windows 10, version 1809, and we are working with Intel to expire these display drivers and provide a resolution in an upcoming release.

- From the Start menu, type Device Manager in the search box. Select Device Manager from the search results.
- Find and expand Display adapters.
- Right-click on the Intel® HD Graphics device.
- Select Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Check your driver version. If the driver version is listed as either 22.214.171.12444, or 126.96.36.19945, your system is affected by this issue. Please contact Microsoft support for a resolution.
