Microsoft has sent out an email to staff members confirming that the company is working on its next-gen console and the project is currently “full speed ahead”. The email was obtained by Windows Central and says the next generation of Xbox hardware will offer the “biggest technological leap ever in a generation”.
This is not the first time we have heard about the next-gen Xbox console. Microsoft was already touching on the subject in February when the company hosted its Xbox Podcast (the same one which announced first-party games for PS5).
Microsoft originally teased “some exciting stuff coming out in hardware” which is expected to be announced this coming holiday season. While details are scarce, the company is expected to showcase an all-digital white Xbox Series X console. Previously leaked documents also revealed a cylindrical digital Xbox Series X console and a revamped Xbox Wireless Controller.
“It’s been nearly six months since we came together as an organization. Our collective achievements in that timeframe are tremendous. Everyone should feel incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the opportunities ahead,” Sarah said, “We are moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware, focused on delivering the biggest technological leap ever in a generation.”
By the sound of things, Microsoft will likely announce that hardware this year for a release later in 2024. However, the next-gen Xbox hardware has also now been confirmed. The company is likely developing the console now for a release sometime in 2028 according to a leak.
We don’t know if Microsoft will launch a super-powered Xbox Series X console this year. All leaks claim that the current Xbox Series X will simply be revamped as a “thinner and all-digital” model. There hasn’t been any talk of a “Pro” console similar to what Sony is doing with the PS5 Pro.
Whatever happens, the idea of a next-gen Xbox console is still exciting. Especially considering the Xbox business was quite gloomy at the start of 2024.
