Monster Hunter Wilds, the next anticipated monster-slaying RPG from Capcom, is on track to release next February and with the new entry comes a plethora of new monsters for players to battle. As it turns out, the process of creating a new monster isn’t that simple. A developer on the game has revealed that it takes a year, depending on the monster, to conceptualise and create new monsters.
Speaking to Screen Rant in a recent interview, Monster Hunter Wilds art director Kaname Fujioka revealed that it takes roughly a year to create a new monster and properly implement them into the games, while also clarifying that “it obviously depends on the monster.” For example, Fujioka said that “the flagship monster for Monster Hunter Wilds obviously took a very long time because it has to do with the story of the game.”
Instead of making each monster one by one, most new monsters are designed simultaneously in development so it’s hard to tell exactly how long each takes to make. Fujioka explained:
“Typically an average from planning a monster, designing it, making a model, animation, it usually takes about one year for a monster. If you add adjusting to it, small, detailed adjustments, it’ll obviously take longer. But that’s a rough timeline.”
Fujioka stated in the interview that Arkveld, the flagship monster of Monster Hunter Wilds, was his personal favourite not only because it took long to create but because it’s “a flashy monster.” He added, “When creating monsters, we want to focus on how each person will be able to find their own favourite monster.”
In case you missed it, dataminers dug through the open beta for Monster Hunter Wilds and discovered a list of unannounced returning monsters such as Gore Magala, Gravios and Nerscylla. The game launches on 28 February 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
