Monster Hunter Wilds Producer Explains AI Support Hunters

Monster Hunter Wilds is shaking up the formula of the Monster Hunter series a bit, now giving players who prefer to play solo offline a few more options during hunts. One of the ways solo hunters can alleviate the stresses of challenging monsters is by seeking the help of an AI character or support hunter, new additions to the series that aim to emulate the experience of hunting with actual players online while giving you a helping hand. Series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has explained how these support hunters work in the game.

Speaking to Games Radar in a recent interview, Monster Hunter Wilds producer Ryozo Tsujimoto explained why new hunters don’t need to jump online if they want help from other hunters. Capcom has added AI characters as support hunters for offline players to assist them during hunts, provide distractions, act as an additional source of damage and generally recreate the feeling of playing online with actual players.

Tsujimoto explained:

“I would say that you don’t need to feel like you have to jump straight online if you’re new to Monster Hunter. It can take a while to get comfortable with the feeling of playing in a group of up to four people. Don’t rush it, and take advantage of the support system that we have built in with the AI characters who can join you on a solo hunt when you’re playing offline.”

The AI characters aren’t just there to give you a hunting buddy, though. They can be vital in trapping and luring monsters too, acting independently as “intelligent characters” on their own. Tsujimoto added:

“That’s a great way for beginners to play sort of fundamentally solo, but get a feeling for what it means to have other hunters in the map with them. They’re quite intelligent characters, and they’ll do things like, you know, maybe distract the monster for you, or lure it to a different place, or help you trap it. And when you see what the support hunters are doing for you, that will give you an idea of what to expect and also what you should want from your fellow players.”

Monster Hunter Wilds launches on 28 February 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. While you’re here, check out our ranking of all the Monster Hunter games from worst to best.
