Monster Hunter Wilds is finally out today and it packs 14 different weapons to choose from, each offering a distinct gameplay style. New players might be wondering where to start considering all the options available – there is an opportunity to try them out at the beginning of the game before settling into your first hunt. We’ve put together a guide highlighting what we believe are some of the best weapons for beginners and newcomers to the series.
With 14 weapon types available in Monster Hunter Wilds, they all offer something unique and different that will personally cater to anyone’s style. Just because these are the best weapons for newcomers (in our opinion), doesn’t mean you have to stick to them. Try out every weapon and find one that clicks with you, regardless of its learning curve. This is a dense 100+ hour action-RPG with more than enough time to experiment. That said, here are the five weapons that we think are prime choices for newcomers.
The Best Weapons For Newcomers in Monster Hunter Wilds
Great Sword
The Great Sword is a classic weapon that, like many on this list, has its roots as far back as the original Monster Hunter on PS2. Known for being a bit slow but hitting with kiloton force, it’s arguably the best weapon in the game for dealing the highest damage numbers in a single hit. It’s not overly complex but just requires players to learn spacing, positioning and how to quickly build its devastating True Charge Slash when given openings.
Lance
If you’re the type of player who enjoys being a tank, look no further than the Lance. Thanks to some refined gameplay mechanics in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Lance is the best its ever been in the series. Like the Great Sword, it doesn’t have any flashy or complicated mechanics. Just poke and block with your shield. You’ll have to get used to standing your ground and relying on your blocking skills to tank hits, but once you get the rhythm nailed down, it’s a surprisingly fun weapon to use.
Dual Blades
The Dual Blades are a favourite weapon for many newcomers to Monster Hunter. Unlike the previously discussed weapons, the Dual Blades are fast, very stylish and make you feel like Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan. If slicing up monsters while having high agility and bouncing around the environment like a whirling beyblade of death sounds fun to you, the Dual Blades are your best option.
Hammer
Everyone’s favourite bonking stick, the Hammer in Monster Hunter Wilds is comically oversized but hits like a truck. If the Great Sword and Lance limited your mobility, the Hammer has that on top of being capable of hitting just as hard. It’s not very difficult to learn – out of all the weapons on this list, we’d say it’s actually the simplest to learn but takes time to truly master. That said, you can pretty much just pick up a Hammer and have a blast regardless of your skill level.
Sword & Shield
Last but certainly not least, we have the good old sword and board, the Sword & Shield. It may look a bit like a “generic fantasy weapon” but you’ll be surprised to discover just how versatile it actually is in the game. Contrary to its appearance, it does quite a bit of damage and can tank hits very well with the right build. On top of that, you have great mobility while using it. It’s a jack of all trades weapon that can easily be built to become a master of all trades with enough time.
