Digital Sun and 11 Bit Studios have announced Moonlighter 2 – the follow-up to the popular 2018 shopkeeper game. The announcement came during the PC Gaming Show Most Wanted 2024 livestream, where the game was unveiled alongside gameplay.
The first thing you’ll notice is that Moonlighter 2 has moved away from 2D sprites and is now a full 3D game. The colourful visuals return thanks to the unique cel-shaded art style, so the experience looks familiar to those who played the first game.
The trailer reveals that Moonlighter 2 will continue the rinse-and-repeat shopkeeper system from the original, where players explore dungeons to defeat enemies, gather materials, and other treasures. Players then run a shop where they will sell these finds to adventurers. As they explore more dungeons, they will discover even more treasure and slowly upgrade their gear and shop. It is a satisfying rogue-lite system that helped make the original game so popular.
Moonlighter 2 will release in 2025 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Digital Sun CEO Javier Gimenez says the sequel showcases everything the studio has learnt throughout the five years in development. He promises that Moonlighter 2 is not just better but also brimming with more charm in every detail.
