More Insiders Claim Mortal Kombat 1 is Ending Development

Several credible Mortal Kombat insiders have claimed that Mortal Kombat 1 from NetherRealm Studios is apparently ending development after the release of the T-1000 from Terminator as a guest character. This is unheard of for a fighting game which usually provides several years worth of additional content rolled out over seasons and battle passes. However, it seems like Mortal Kombat 1 might be shuttering its development early.

Last week, we reported on a rumour claiming that Warner Bros. Games was pulling the plug on Mortal Kombat 1 due to poor sales. This means that future DLC and a planned new story expansion were cancelled. Now, some credible Mortal Kombat insiders such as FateUnknown, R000r and Joever have stepped forward to corroborate the report, confirming to have heard similar news that Mortal Kombat 1 will receive no more content after a certain point.

In most cases, fighting games like Tekken, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter lay out multiple year-long plans with character passes that include new fighters, stages or modes gradually added to the game over years. The previous game in the series, Mortal Kombat 11 dropped content for at least three years – which included new guest characters as well as legacy fighters – before making way for Mortal Kombat 1.

It seems like poor sales might’ve been a crucial deciding factor in shutting down Mortal Kombat 1‘s development. While exact updated sales figures aren’t known for the game, it appears to have underperformed compared to its predecessors.

On the bright side, developer NetherRealm Studios confirmed back in August that it was already working on its next AAA game after Mortal Kombat 1. Many fans assume that it’s Injustice 3 while others think it might be a riskier new IP like the long-rumoured Marvel vs. DC. Either way, things aren’t looking good for Mortal Kombat 1 which might be ceasing post-launch development a lot sooner than Warner Bros. Games was probably anticipating.
