More People are Playing on Steam Than Ever Before Due To Coronavirus

Staying at home is actually good for you during the coronavirus pandemic and Steam is having its best time since launch due to all the gamers taking the World Health Organization’s advice and staying indoors. During the weekend, Steam reached a record high of 6.2 million active players with 20 million players being logged in at the same time.

The Steam Database site revealed the news stating that the numbers are a new record for the PC client. The record-high numbers also beat the previous record by almost 300,000 people. As usual, CS: GO is clocking the most players active sitting at close to 400,000 with an all-time high of 1 million during the past 24 hours. CS: GO also hit an all-time high over the weekend with 1,024,825 players.

The Steam player number records have been climbing since January when governments around the world began instructing people to start self-isolating due to the coronavirus. Steam’s previous record of 18 million was hit in early February but it was slashed this past weekend as more governments crack down on social distancing and self-isolation. Steam will no doubt see these numbers rise in the coming weeks as gamers have been waiting for an excuse to stay at home and play games all day.

President Cyril Ramaposa announced a national emergency last night in South Africa which asks for people to avoid each other and stay at home if possible.
