The big gameplay reveal for the recently announced Mortal Kombat 1 from NetherRealm Studios is set for Summer Game Fest next month. The latest entry in the bloody fighting game franchise was revealed with a pretty brutal and violent CGI trailer last week but no gameplay was shown (despite pre-orders already going live). However, fans won’t have to wait long to see it in action.
The official Twitter account for Summer Game Fest tweeted yesterday that gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 will be shown at the live kick-off event on 8 June. Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon will personally appear at the show on stage with host Geoff Keighley to present the first look at gameplay. Unlike previous Summer Game Fest shows, this year’s event will be broadcasted live in front of an audience at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.

Fans originally speculated that gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 would appear at the PlayStation Showcase today, presuming that Sony had secured some exclusivity deal for the upcoming game. While it’s still possible that we might see some PS5-exclusive things, it seems like NetherRealm Studios wants to keep the excitement open to all platforms as it takes the stage at Summer Game Fest this year.
Mortal Kombat 1 is billed as a reboot of the fighting game franchise and a subtle continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 DLC, Aftermath. Fire God Liu Kang has created his own universe where things have essentially restarted, including rivalries between familiar characters. Shang Tsung is also back in his much younger form, though he’s subjected to an incredibly brutal fatality from Liu Kang.
Amazon recently leaked the contents of Kombat Pack 1, including the guest characters such as Homelander from The Boys, Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad (and Peacemaker) and Omni Man from Invincible. It’s quite a stellar lineup of guest fighters that suggests the DLC theme of this Mortal Kombat game could be superheroes or individuals with extraordinary abilities.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches on 19 September 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
