Mortal Kombat 1 Players are Resetting Their Console Dates to Avoid Paying for Skins

Mortal Kombat 1 players aren’t too happy with the way Warner Bros Games and developer NetherRealm Studios have handled the game’s post-launch monetisation. After a very strong start back in September, the game has undergone some rather controversial episodes and this latest one has fans literally resetting their console dates to avoid paying for character skins that were once available for free.

Invasions, Mortal Kombat 1‘s board game-styled single-player mini-game, launched its first season not too long ago that allowed players to unlock new character skins by simply playing through the mode. Players noticed that a recent update turned the once free skins into paid items on the store with no other way to earn them as of writing – not even through Invasions. As a result, players have utilised time travel, in a way, to completely avoid having to pay for these skins.

Twitter/X user iScreamFGC discovered that by simply changing the date on your PS5 to any date before 6 November, players could still earn the character skins for free by completing the last season’s events. A change back to the current date afterwards reveals that you keep all your earned rewards as opposed to forking out cash to buy them:

Commenters under the post also reported this being possible on Nintendo Switch as well. Further testing by other players showed that this is true, at least for now, until a new update rectifies the “issue.” We recommend using this method to grab those Invasions skins before a hot fix is implemented.

Despite garnering strong reviews at launch, Mortal Kombat 1‘s controversial post-launch monetisation has only drummed up outrage from the community. There’s a growing concern that this trend will continue in future updates as Warner Bros Games shifts its focus to live service.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
