Mortal Kombat 1 dropped a bombshell yesterday when it revealed that actress Megan Fox, best known for Jennifer’s Body and the Transformers movies, will be playing the vampire Nitara. As fans know, Nitara’s last appearance in the Mortal Kombat franchise was 17 years ago with the PS2 game, Armageddon. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that the character is making a re-appearance in the series and with a renowned actress lending her voice to the role.
NetherRealm Studios released a new trailer recently confirming that Megan Fox will be voicing Nitara in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. The trailer, which is more of a behind-the-scenes look at Fox’s enthusiasm for the role, gives us our first look at Nitara with her new, modern design and Fox’s voice acting chops. Nitara made her first appearance in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance but apart from Armageddon in 2006, hasn’t been seen in the series since.

During the new video, Fox describes Nitara:
“She comes from this weird realm. She is a type of vampire creature. She’s evil but she’s also good. She’s trying to save her people. I really like her. She’s a vampire, which obviously… resonates for whatever reason.”
That pause in her description is either a reference to her role in Jennifer’s Body as a murderous succubus or the fact that she reportedly drank her partner Machine Gun Kelly’s blood.
Mortal Kombat is no stranger to casting celebrities as characters. Mortal Kombat 11 cast professional MMA fighter Ronda Rousey as Sonya Blade, though fans criticised her performance for being notably flat. However, Fox is definitely a step above Rousey in her portrayal of Nitara from what we’ve seen so far, so that’s good news.
In other news, Mortal Kombat co-creator said he wants to do something different after Mortal Kombat 1, though didn’t state what it was. We managed to get hands-on time with the pre-order beta and walked away pretty impressed. You can read our full thoughts right here.
