Following some reports of Mortal Kombat 12 being in active development at NetherRealm Studios, a recent social media post by actor Andrew Bowen, who portrays Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, could’ve teased the next entry as he appeared at the Warner Bros. Studio lot.
Bowen recently uploaded a video of himself on Twitter showing the actor at Warner Bros. Studio (which has now been deleted, but reported by IGN). The tweet is accompanied by the text, “Every deadly technique. It’s savage combat.” Interestingly, the background music in the clip sounds suspiciously like the opening theme for Mortal Kombat 2, further adding fuel to the fire.

While NetherRealm Studios has yet to officially announce its next major title, previous reports suggested that they were prioritising the development of Mortal Kombat 12 over the next Injustice due to the uncertainty of the series’ future with parent company WB Games.
According to renowned insider Jeff Grubb, Mortal Kombat 12 has been in development for some time. He addressed the issues surrounding Injustice and why NetherRealm Studios would rather focus on its gory fighter first:
“It lines up with the reality and it lines up with what I’ve heard, where Mortal Kombat 12 would make the most sense because that’s a game they know will make money, it will sell well… Mortal Kombat 11 was great, it’s doing well, but if you come out with Mortal Kombat 12 it will also sell and do well.
At the same time, you don’t have to use any of these Batman or Superman characters that might be tied up in licensing if you try to get rid of NetherRealm or sell it to whoever.”
According to publisher WB Games, the latest entry, Mortal Kombat 11, managed to sell an impressive 12 million copies since its launch in 2019. It makes sense that WB Games and NetherRealm would pay attention to the clear money maker here, despite Injustice 2 also doing relatively well in sales too.
