An announcement for Mortal Kombat 12 might happen sometime this week, according to professional Mortal Kombat player SonicFox. NetherRealm Studios has been quietly developing its next major fighting game which might be one of the gaming industry’s worst-kept secrets at this point. After plenty of teases from series co-creator Ed Boon, it seems like fans might be in for an official reveal of the next Mortal Kombat game very soon.
SonicFox is no stranger to the competitive fighting game scene. Having won plenty of Mortal Kombat tournaments over the past decade, the player has risen to become one of the most recognisable names in Mortal Kombat and fighting game esports. Speaking on Twitter recently, SonicFox stated that they anticipate a reveal for Mortal Kombat 12 to happen this week.

It’s unclear if SonicFox knows information that the public doesn’t yet but it’s possible that a few professional players could’ve already been given a heads-up ahead of the announcement. We already know that publisher Warner Bros Games plans to launch Mortal Kombat 12 before the end of the year after the company prematurely announced the sequel in an earnings report, so the timing seems right.
Rumours surrounding Mortal Kombat 12 have been all over the place so it’s hard to really pin down exactly what we can expect. Early reports stated that the game would act as a “celebration of the series” and feature a massive roster of fighters comparable to Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. We aren’t sure if this report is true but we’ll surely know all the details once an official announcement is made.
Unfortunately, those hoping for Injustice 3 might have to wait a bit longer as NetherRealm Studios has seemingly prioritised the development of the next Mortal Kombat. Given the strong sales of Mortal Kombat 11, that shouldn’t come as a surprise.
