The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie, the sequel to 2021’s live-action Mortal Kombat from director Simon McQuoid, has received an October release date by Warner Bros. Specifically, the anticipated sequel will arrive in cinemas on 24 October 2025.
Director Simon McQuoid will return to helm Mortal Kombat 2 with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater. Lewis Tan will reprise his role as Cole Young alongside other returning cast members from the first movie including Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung and Mehcad Brooks as Jax, among others.
New to the cast for the sequel is Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
With a release date of 25 October 2025 secured, we’ll be in for a long wait before we can watch the continuation of the first Mortal Kombat movie, which set up a sequel to cover the actual brutal tournament between Earth Realm and Outworld. The plot is also being kept tightly under wraps for now, though we speculate that Shao Kahn will definitely be positioned as the main villain of the sequel (and possible entries afterwards, should the sequel be successful).
The first Mortal Kombat movie released in 2021 to a mixed reception. Fans and critics praised the movie’s fight choreography, graphic violence (in tone with the violence of the games) and costumes, though criticism was aimed at its writing and strange decision to make a new character – Cole Young – the protagonist instead of Liu Kang, who is already somewhat the protagonist of the Mortal Kombat games. Liu Kang is featured in the adaptation, though he’s portrayed as a side character.
Mortal Kombat 2 releases on 25 October 2025.
