Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Release Date October 2025

Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Gets R-Rating For Strong Violence and Gore

The live-action Mortal Kombat 2 movie, the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat from director Simon McQuoid, is currently in production. Details are still being kept tightly under wraps but we know that it will continue the story that started off in the first movie, hopefully bringing us the bloody tournament we’ve been waiting for. According to an early rating, the sequel has also been given an R-rating for violence, gore and language.

The first live-action Mortal Kombat movie wasn’t necessarily a direct adaptation of the beloved fighting games from NetherRealm Studios. The story followed an original character, a young fighter named Cole Young (played by Lewis Tan) who meets up with familiar characters like Sonya Blade, Jax and Kano to take part in the fated tournament between realms. Sadly, the tournament never actually happened in the first movie as it was mostly set-up for a sequel that did promise the big showdowns.

It looks like we’ll finally be getting those square-offs in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie. As reported by DiscussingFilm, the sequel received an R-rating for violence, gore and language, which is the exact same rating that its predecessor got. The new movies managed to stay faithful to the violent tone of the games with the R-rating as we got to see some great fatalities without any restraint.

As for casting, Tan will reprise his role as Cole Young alongside returning cast like Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, who was arguably the best part of the first movie. The sequel will also introduce other iconic characters like Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Ana Thu Nguyen (Sindel), Damon Herriman (Quan Chi) and Karl Urban (Johnny Cage).

Mortal Kombat 2 arrives in cinemas on 24 October 2025.
