Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Might Cast Karl Urban as Johnny Cage

Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 live-action Mortal Kombat movie, might be closing a deal to get Dredd and The Boys actor Karl Urban in the shoes of Johnny Cage. The popular character from the video games by NetherRealm Studios didn’t make an appearance in the first movie, though it ended on cliffhanger potentially teasing his arrival in the sequel.

According to a report from The Wrap, Urban is reportedly in talks to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The actor has a long history in movies and television, notably appearing in the live-action Doom movie alongside Dwayne Johnson, portraying Eomer in The Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as playing the new Judge Dredd in the reboot. However, many would argue that his biggest role to date is Billy The Butcher from the superhero series, The Boys.

The sequel will begin filming in June and some potential villains were already discussed including Shao Khan. It doesn’t seem like Warner Bros Discovery has cast Shao Khan yet (that might be giving away too much after all), so we’ll just have to wait and see how the story unfolds.

Mortal Kombat 2 will continue the story set in the first movie. When we left the original crew, protagonist Cole Young seemingly set off on a journey to recruit Hollywood actor and martial arts expert Johnny Cage in an impending battle against Outworld.

Johnny Cage has appeared in almost every Mortal Kombat game since the 90s and is widely considered a key part of the legacy fighter lineup. It makes sense that the filmmakers would want to bring him into the fold with the sequel, which has yet to introduce a handful of other popular characters from the games.

Mortal Kombat 2 currently doesn’t have a release date but that might change this year.
