Mortal Kombat 9 PS4 and PS5 Backwards Compatibility Teased

2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot, or otherwise known as Mortal Kombat 9, might be heading to PS4 and PS5 via backwards compatibility. The news comes from NetherRealm Studios creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon teased the news in a recent Twitter exchange, stating that he’s currently “looking into” bringing the game to newer generations of PlayStation.

Mortal Kombat 9 (or officially just labeled as Mortal Kombat) was a critically acclaimed reboot of the bloody fighting game series that most fans agree sits among the best in the franchise. However, while the game is playable on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One if you own a physical copy of it on Xbox 360, the only way to play it on PlayStation is to own a PS3 physical copy of the game since it was never brought to PS4 or PS5.

That might all change soon if Boon and the studio are currently looking into bringing the beloved fighter to PS4 and PS5. It might just arrive as a new addition to Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium library. Alternatively, you can also purchase Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition on Steam right now, though it’s console availability, at least on PlayStation, is limited at the moment.

The official description provided by NetherRealm Studios for Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition reads:

“The newest chapter of the iconic fighting franchise is now available! Experience the deadliest tournament with all the kombatants and their unique fatalities. Players enter the realm to face the Kombatants in Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition, delivering all of the downloadable content (DLC), including intrepid warriors Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain, as well as the notorious dream stalker Freddy Krueger. Additionally, the game offers 15 Klassic Mortal Kombat Skins and three Klassic Fatalities (Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile).”

Hopefully, we’ll hear more news soon from Boon and company regarding Mortal Kombat 9 finally being made available on PS4 and PS5.
