The Mortal Kombat movie is set to debut in April this year in Cinemas and HBO Max and our first look at a handful of iconic characters has arrived. Warner Bros released some shots of the film which showcase Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Jax, Sonya, and Kano. The film studio also released the official synopsis for the movie too. The news comes from Entertainment Weekly who offered a closer look at the upcoming R-Rated (yes R-Rated) film.
“When we first meet Cole, he’s in a really bad spot. He’s down on his luck. He’s kind of a washed-up MMA fighter who used to be a champion, who used to believe in himself, who used to have a lot of hope in his career. And it’s all gone down the drain. It’s a very interesting place for a hero to start, and I think that, along the journey of Mortal Kombat and Cole discovering where he comes from, you’re introduced to all these other iconic characters and elements that everybody loves so dearly.”
According to the movie’s official synopsis, the film will follow Tan who portrays Cole Young as a “washed up MMA fighter”. He bears the birthmark in the shape of the Mortal Kombat symbol on his chest which forces him to investigate its meaning. Thus, he goes on an adventure with Sonya Blade who leads him to the temple of the iconic Elder Gos known as Lord Raiden. It is here where he meets the group of skilled fighters.
Cole and the other fighters spend their time at the temple training for a tournament which is described as a “high-stakes tournament to defeat the invading enemies from the Outerworld.” This is where the meat of the movie will come from according to Director Simon McQuoid. The film will include some of the “best fight sequences ever done in a movie ever” which also includes some “crazy fatalities” too.
McQuoid says that the Mortal Komubat movie includes loads of blood, gore and fatalities. These include some signature ones which fans of the video game series will be familiar with.
“We’ve picked a couple of iconic ones. There’s a lot of really cool signature moves that you’ll see, a lot of Easter eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass fatalities that I can’t wait to see on the big screen. They’re brutal, man. They, they don’t hold back.”
The combat is then brought to life thanks to the roster of characters which include everyone’s favourites. Scorpion, Sub-Zero and more will appear in the Mortal Kombat movie. Check out some images of these characters down below.
Warner Bros plans on releasing the Mortal Kombat movie on 16 April 2021.
