MSI E13 Flip Evo Review

MSI might be able to output great gaming notebooks and components but the brand is well adverse in the productivity and creator spectrum too. These notebooks sacrifice powerful GPUs and high refresh rate displays in favour of high-resolution displays that are better calibrated and faster CPUs. Creator notebooks often mean slimmer designs as users need them around when travelling from location to location. The MSI E13 Flip Evo is a premium 2-in-1 ultrabook that packs the latest Intel 12th-gen CPUs.

2-in-1 meaning this MSI E13 Flip Evo can be used as a notebook with the keyboard and trackpad but you can also rotate the screen all around to the other side of the notebook to turn this into a tablet too. The device is also extremely light weighing only 1.35Kgs. MSI clearly wasn’t playing around here when the company decides to challenge the ZenBook and Macbook range.

MSI E13 Flip Evo Design

The design of this notebook is actually quite impressive. MSI has gone with a darker shell and added in some premium rose gold trimming here and there to give it a striking look. The rose gold is more copper if we had to compare it to actual rose gold. MSI says the shell on the notebook is made from a block of CNC-milled aluminium and it looks good. The chamfered edges make a world of difference for the design and you’ll know this is a creator notebook by looking at it.

Sadly, the shell gets dirty very quickly. It picks up fingerprints so fast and I had to constantly wipe it down with a microfibre cloth to keep it clean. It is one of those devices you’ll just give up on cleaning.

Closed, the machine is only 1.5cm thick which is actually unworldly when you think of it. Due to its lightweight design and thin shell, the device is easy to carry around and turn into a tablet and use without any issue. It feels durable and there was no real fear of me snapping it or damaging the display while using it in tablet mode.

The MSI E13 Flip Evo stands strong when in tent mode and didn’t slide across the desk either. This is a common issue with hybrid notebooks so it was nice to see.

On the left-hand side, there are two USB C ports and a USB A port. On the right-hand side, there’s a MicroSD card slot that supports up to 2TB, a webcam toggle, another USB C port that doubles up as the charging port and an audio combo port.

The keyboard is also okay to type on. The distance between the keys is a bit cramped and the keys are quite flat making them feel off when typing. You don’t get that satisfying click you want from a key press. I also had an issue with the plastic on the keys. They felt cheap and slippery

MSI says the notebook is military-grade durable meaning it can withstand shock dust and low-pressure altitudes. Considering all that, the keyboard is just okay. There’s also a fingerprint reader on the keyboard.

As for the touchpad, it is fairly large and felt nice to swipe across. It is large enough to perform all the gestures you would usually perform. The MSI E13 Flip Evo comes with a stylus too. It features 4,096 levels of pressure, title support and hover detection. It is your average notebook stylus but that isn’t a bad thing either. It also comes with two different tips. One tip is the POM black tip and smoother on the display. It is also made for writing while the other is a white tip for drawing. It boasts 65 hours of battery life too and some integration into MSI’s apps and features.

MSI E13 Flip Evo Performance

The general performance of the MSI E13 Flip Evo was impressive considering this thin and light notebook. It makes for a great office companion thanks to MSI’s so-called “AI” integration. One example is the ability to reduce background noise while using the webcam but it isn’t that great.

The device is capable of a max of 28w of power on the CPU which is a first for me. Other notebooks are capped at 23W. You can definitely feel the difference here though. CPU usage was stable, high and didn’t get throttled once. Even when pumping all the power out of this notebook in the most stressful tests, it performed quite well.

The MSI E13 Flip Evo also managed to stay cool during tests without reaching high temperatures. I measure 57 degrees C after 30 minutes of TimeSpy and 3DMark tests in high-performance mode. The fans were louder and faster. However, in balance mode, they were slower and quieter but this allowed the notebook to get a little hotter at 70 degrees C. Tests showed the following

MSI E13 Flip Evo Benchmark Tests

  • Geekbench Single Core – 1587
  • Geekbench Multi-Core – 5701
  • 3DMark TimeSpy
    • Overall – 1842
    • GPU – 1670
    • CPU – 4761

MSI says the MSI E13 Flip Evo can run for up to 20 hours of battery life. This is sort of true. When using the MSI Super Battery mode, you’ll likely get a full day and the next of around 17-18 hours on this mode. Of course, this means sacrificing some performance and display brightness to achieve this. It is a great battery regardless. It also charges super-fast. You can get around 50 minutes of battery life with just 15 minutes of charge thanks to the 65W adapter.

The display is okay for a notebook like this. It features a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and is 16:10. The higher aspect ratio makes it easy to read documents and the 500 nit display also keeps things bright and vivid. It also counters the reflective glass surface which is definitely needed here.

The speakers are what you would expect from a notebook this thin. They are just good. The speakers will get you through your day but don’t expect them to be loud and powerful enough to fill a small room.

MSI E13 Flip Evo Verdict

The MSI E13 Flip Evo has some shortcomings here and there, especially on the keyboard front. However, the notebook is actually quite an impressive feat of technology. It is super-thin, so light and packs some incredible performance. It is a contender to look out for when shopping around for a Surface Pro 2 for sure.
