MultiVersus Costs Over R4000 to Unlock Everything

MultiVersus will drop in open beta on the 26th of July and it seems that players will need to spend roughly R4000 or more to unlock everything in the game. While there is a good amount of content that can be unlocked just by playing the game, there are certain skins that can only be bought with real-world money, which amounts to around $250 or R4000.

The Warner Bros. brawler dropped early access for those who participated in the closed alpha test, won codes from Twitch drops as well as those who paid for a Founder’s Pack Bundle. In a beautiful representation of mobile-gaming economics, there are in-game coins that can be earned just by playing the game, and then there is Gleamium – a premium currency that can only be acquired through real-world money.

As you might have guessed, there seems to be a sizeable amount of cosmetic content that is locked behind Gleamium walls and as such cannot be unlocked through standard gameplay. While it is a little forgivable that the title is free-to-play, it means very little when 13 of the 17 unlockable skins are locked behind a real-world paywall through Gleamium.

Gleamium can be bought in four packs:

  • 450 for $4.99
  • 1,000 for $9.99
  • 2,200 for $19.99
  • 6,000 for $49.99

When starting out, only four of the 16 playable characters are available and it seems that the rest can be unlocked through coins or by purchasing them with Gleamium but since I have not actually played the title yet, I cannot confirm if they are unlockable just by playing. Below is a breakdown of the costs involved with unlocking everything in the game (thanks, VGC).

  • Character skins 17 in total, 13 are Gleamium-only (total cost is 14,450, at least $125)
  • Ringout VFX animations  14 in total, 9 are Gleamium-only (total cost is 9,600, at least $85)
  • Taunts 16 in total, 13 are Gleamium-only (total cost is 5,300, at least $50)
  • Sticker emotes 5 in total, 2 are Gleamium-only (total cost is 300, at least $5)
  • Banners 8 in total, 1 is Gleamium-only (total cost is 350, at least $5)

The total cost of all these items comes to exactly 30,000 Gleamium but as some items are only unlockable through the paid battle pass (which costs 300 Gleamium), it’s bumped up to 30,300 in total. The lowest amount of physical money you would need to spend to get this amount of Gleamium comes to $254.94, or a little over R4000 at the current exchange rate.

MultiVersus will get an open beta for PC and consoles from the 16th of July and a leaker has suggested that Scorpion (Mortal Kombat) and Ted Lasso (Ted Lasso) are set to join the roster.
