Riven, the 1997 sequel to the award-winning puzzle-solving game Myst, is getting a modern remake. Developer Cyan Worlds confirmed the news via an official announcement on its social media channels along with a short teaser video, celebrating Riven‘s 25th anniversary as well.
The Riven remake will be more than just another point-and-click adventure, as Cyan Worlds revealed that it will allow players to freely explore the world in a 3D space. “This new Riven is not an update or upgrade, it is a modern from-the-ground-up remake that has required (and will continue to require) a substantial investment of resources,” said the studio.
Riven‘s predecessor Myst already received a ‘modern remake’ back in 2020 which also got rid of the point-and-click gameplay in favour of allowing players to freely traverse the world and solve puzzles. The remake for Riven sounds like it will follow a similar pattern.
Depending on who you ask, Riven is celebrated as one of the best puzzle-solving games of all time or considered an equally confusing sequel. However, you can’t deny its imaginative premise, striking art direction and world design, and fantastic gameplay that continued Myst‘s signature traversal and environmental puzzles.
The official Steam page description for Riven reads:
“Prepare to enter a world torn asunder by timeless, unresolved conflicts–a world of incomparable beauty, intrigue, and betrayal. Prepare to go to Riven. Journey through vast, awe-inspiring landscapes, where clouds sit nestled in a deep blue sky and the rolling sea waters shimmer from bright morning sunlight. But be forewarned: nothing is quite as it seems. Reclusive beings and mysterious creatures populate the land. Deep, dark secrets lay hidden at every turn. Your utmost powers of observation and reason are required to complete a most elusive task. You must let Riven become your world. Only then may the truth be discovered and a world saved. Riven stands as a story for all time, a story that evokes a sense of awe, wonder, and profound purpose. Prepare to go to Riven–a world unlike any you’ve ever known.”
Cyan Worlds has not provided a release date for the Riven remake.
