Microsoft is set to host the next Xbox Developer Direct showcase on 23 January where it promises to unveil new trailers for exciting upcoming games like DOOM: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, there’s also a fourth mystery title that will be announced during the show. New reports suggest that this unknown game comes from a “legendary Japanese IP with decades of history.”
The report comes from Windows Central which stated that “it’s a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP that has decades of history, and it will make many happy.” Many initially suspected Xbox to announce the long-rumoured remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion but that doesn’t seem to be the case, according to this rumour.
As for what Xbox’s mystery title could be, there are quite a lot of franchises that fit the criteria. Speculation has run rampant online with a few plausible franchises standing out. Some suspect that Atlus will finally unveil Persona 6, which is due for an announcement at this stage. Others believe that it could be a new Nier game following 2017’s Nier: Automata, while there are fans subscribed to the idea that we’ll see Dragon Quest 12.
One of the more outlandish guesses thrown out there is a new 3D Castlevania game from Konami, which might actually have some legs to stand on. Back in March 2023, it was reported that Konami was working on a new entry in the series codenamed ‘Project Zircon’. A few months later, a rumour claimed that Sony signed an exclusivity deal with Konami which included the Silent Hill 2 remake (we now know that to be correct) and a new Castlevania game, though that begs the question why it would show up at an Xbox showcase.
Either way, we’ll just have to tune into the Xbox Developer Direct on 23 January 2025 to find out more.
